Farm Labor :: A day in the life, Immokalee FL

Enter Collier county, Florida. A classic tale of two towns. On the one hand you have Naples, the nation’s second-wealthiest metropolitan area. On the other, Immokalee, dubbed by Barry Estabrook (of Tomatoland) the "tomato capital of the United States of America". Now, I know what you're thinking, "Oh Immokalee!? Yeah, they produce like 90% of the fresh domestic tomatoes consumed in winter/spring months in the US right? What are they, the nation's third wealthiest metropolitan area?".

Farm Labor :: Grape Country, Napa CA

Farm Labor Documentary Project Origins: In August of this year, I set out with 4 other intrepid New Yorkers on a quest to figure out where our food (specifically fresh fruit + wine) comes from. And to film a documentary about our journey out of the city and into the fields. On a certain level we were feigning naivety - where does food come from? well farms of course! - yet as we would soon find, our naivety to the modern American agricultural system was not feigned, but rather a naivety ingrained and reinforced within us to an extent far beyond what we were conscious of.

MUSIC :: "Lost in My Mind" - the Head and the Heart (unofficial music video)

iPHONEOGRAPHY :: The Unseen Photographer - Poker Faces

It goes without saying that I am not the first to postulate on the topic of cell phone photography, but it is something that comes to mind often, and that I was reminded of recently while visiting the SFMOMA where they have an excellent exhibition called "Exposed: voyeurism, surveillance, and the camera since 1870".

The following is a breakdown of my musings inspired by the aforementioned exhibit, and my recent forays into cell phone photography:

NGO :: Awamaki - The Sacred Valley

In the spring of 2010 I returned to the Sacred Valley of Peru, to team up with a small not for profit organization called Awamaki.

I ended up spending three weeks living in the ancient Inca town of Ollantaytambo, photographing Awamki's programs which work to bring together volunteers from all over the world to help in the health clinic, the schools, and rural communities.

About Awamaki:

NGO :: WAVES for Development

In the spring of 2010 I traveled to Lobitos, a small fishing village in the north of Peru which also happens to feature world class point breaks. During my two weeks in Lobitos, I teamed up with an awesome crew of volunteers at WAVEs for Development and worked on photographing their journey, as well as filming Capture a documentary about Lobitos and the WAVEs organization.

NGO :: Hungry Eyes - A tale of milk, masculinity and dance

Besides being a tale of masculinity and dance, Hungry Eyes is also an homage to the importance of milk.

We want children to be able to drink milk so that they can grow up strong and healthy and have a better chance of being able to dance good, and do other things good too.

In the making of "Hungry Eyes" we used $1 worth of milk. Obviously, $1 can go a long way here in Peru.
