NGO :: WAVES for Development

In the spring of 2010 I traveled to Lobitos, a small fishing village in the north of Peru which also happens to feature world class point breaks. During my two weeks in Lobitos, I teamed up with an awesome crew of volunteers at WAVEs for Development and worked on photographing their journey, as well as filming Capture a documentary about Lobitos and the WAVEs organization.

NGO :: Hungry Eyes - A tale of milk, masculinity and dance

Besides being a tale of masculinity and dance, Hungry Eyes is also an homage to the importance of milk.

We want children to be able to drink milk so that they can grow up strong and healthy and have a better chance of being able to dance good, and do other things good too.

In the making of "Hungry Eyes" we used $1 worth of milk. Obviously, $1 can go a long way here in Peru.

MUSIC :: a Bus to Asia

A ride across a bridge to a new continent.

Two people from very different cultures communicating through music.

ACTION :: Parkour in Istanbul

If Cenk had been alive a mere 500 years ago during the reign of the Ottoman empire, no doubt he would have been highly sought after as a warrior or assasin. Instead he lives in Istanbul circa 2010 and rounds out his skill set as a teacher, PHD candidate, quadrilingual, professional stuntman, free runner, inline skater and flamethrower.

His training in Parkour allows him to move through his surroundings effortlessly and gracefully.

MUSIC :: Bonnaroo - The Night Man Cometh

MGMT, Girl Talk, Passion Pit, Portugal. The Man, Crystal Castles, Public Enemy, People Under the Stairs, Cage the Elephant, Chairlift, and more in this photo/video montage.

ACTION :: Kayaking back home in the mountains

Growing up around the Woodward household there were a few certainties in life: you wore cloth diapers, thought granola was a food group, and you kayaked. Ol' papa Woodward has sometimes been referred to as one of the "founding fathers" of whitewater kayaking in the Southeast (you can check out his book here), and it followed logically that at the age of four I found myself on the river in a kayak, and at the ripe old age of six was kayaking class II-III whitewater in the NC mountains.

TRAVEL :: The Moped Diaries - Part II

Day 3: 6:00 AM -John wakes me up in the morning to shoot sunrise. "Hey man, I don't think I'm gonna..." is all I need to hear. When we wake up next the sun is well on its way. Exploring the town we are informed that there is no mechanic, but the old campesino running the gas station might be able to help us. You get funny looks riding a scooter. The looks are even funnier when you only have one scooter to share.

TRAVEL :: The Moped Diaries - Part I

2 underpowered mopeds. 4 days. 600 Kilometers. Following winding mountain roads through the ancient whitewashed "Pueblos Blancos" of southern Spain our two heroes (read: Dumb and Dumber) set out over the Sierra Beticas in search of something more than the inside of the classrooms and museums of Sevilla.
