Climbing :: Red River Gorge

Arriving late Sunday night on a beautiful fall evening in the Red River Gorge, I called Ashima's aunt (Kay) exchanged pleasantries, and made a plan to meet up with them for a couple days of photographing as 11 year old Ashima set out to climb some of the Red's most difficult routes.

"Let's meet at Miguel's I suggested, I'll be wearing a blue jack--"

Laughter from the other end of the phone cuts me off "just look for the tiny Asian girl!" interjected Kay.

Summit For Someone :: Mt. Whitney

At 9:30 AM, on April 27th, our Summit for Someone team topped out on Mt. Whitney via the mountaineer's route.

Along the way we had a heck of a lot of fun, and managed to raise a combined 30K to help get at risk youth out on their own wilderness adventures!!

South Africa :: Climbing

While traveling in South Africa earlier this year I had the good fortune to meet, photograph, and climb with some really awesome guys.

In the photos above you'll get to meet:

Kai Fitchen: 18 year old Kai just embarked on an amazing trip, Kape2Kenya, a youth empowerment and eco-awareness campaign using adventure and a love for Africa's wild spaces to inspire young people to act. Speaking with Kai I was incredibly impressed with not just his track record in the mountains, but the fine sensabilities and...

Summit For Someone :: Why I climb

"Take us back to sea level!" scream the traitorous, cowardly, jello stick legs that now flap jack in scattered rhythm, attached by pure happenstance it seems to the equally traitorous lungs that, had they not long ago ceased to contain any oxygen, would surely have spilled the most embarrassing of betrayals. The granite tufts and red dirt of a steep mountain path leave little doubt that, despite the inner voice which assures me repeatedly that I have arrived at the gates of hell, I am in fact in Boulder, Colorado.

Utah :: Desert Sky and Dirt Bag Dreams

Over the last couple years I've been fortunate to reconnect with some old friends and make some pretty darn cool new ones as I've jumped/fallen/scrambled into the world of rock climbing. Along the way I've also picked up on the strange and varied vernacular of the climbing culture. "Crux", "splitter", "epicing", "bomber", "bootie", "gobi" "redpoint" and a myriad of other seemingly crude and nonsensical terms have entered my vocabulary, creeping insidiously into a deeper part of my psyche and awakening in me what can probably best be termed "dirt bag" dreams.
